Cognitive Stimulation
Fostering Well-Being and a Sense of Belonging
For many frail elderly, growing older has meant growing more isolated. The Cognitive Stimulation Program is designed to foster a sense of belonging. SCS has a special tool, Cognitive Stimulation Kits, to encourage lively conversation and the sharing of memories. Reminiscence is a simple yet powerful way to promote well-being. It builds connections to others based on shared experiences and promotes a positive review of one’s life. This unique program was created and developed by the former Horizons Unlimited Geriatric Education Corporation.
Used in homes, senior centers, assisted living facilities, adult day care centers and other sites, each kit focuses on a theme related to history, people, nature, travel, and special topics. Kits contain music, pictures, poetry, memorabilia, brain strengthening activities, and a DVD. Personnel or volunteers receive free training in use of the material. Above all, the program provides the foundation to build essential connections to others.
